#DocOscar: Are Smaller, More Serious Films Being Pushed Out Of Race? http://www.deadline.com/2014/07/oscars-controversy-erupts-over-new-rules-in-documentary-branch-are-smaller-more-serious-films-being-pushed-out-of-the-race/ …
@timhorsburgh @thefilmcynic A lot of the films with the $ are the social issue docs, but the nature of the voting favours the populist.

@CharlotteCook@thefilmcynic To me the biggest impact of the new rules is to enforce docs to have a theatrical distributor: a rebuke to DIY. -
@timhorsburgh@CharlotteCook@thefilmcynic Used to be doc branch looked askance at popular success of HOOP DREAMS, ROGER & ME, etc. -
@SamuelAAdams@timhorsburgh@CharlotteCook@thefilmcynic Don't think its a rebuke to DIY. More a rebuke to four-walling. -
@CinemaGuild@SamuelAAdams@CharlotteCook@thefilmcynic get that but thought most 4-walling was by DIY docs? (you know more on this than me) -
@timhorsburgh 4-walling is really "buying" a theatrical. True DIY releases get regular theatrical runs. -
@CinemaGuild That sounds ideal (and the ideal of the Academy). I was thinking the reality is more the other way. But I could be wrong. -
@timhorsburgh docs by reducing the number of qualifying films. -
@CinemaGuild Agree. I think people like complaining about the Doc Oscar. See my note earlier:https://twitter.com/timhorsburgh/status/486518564099457024 …
