Earth physically rotates in 23hours 56min relative to distant stars – a Sidereal Day, BUT it takes 24hours to rotate relative to the Sun – a Solar Day The difference? Earth orbits the Sun, so the Sun appears to move (down, in the vid), which means Earth needs +4mins to catch up!

My numerical OCD is flaring over today’s date being a palindrome of just 2 numbers: 02022020 ... in either DDMMYYY or MMDDYYYY format!... or even YYYYMMDD in which case it’s 20200202 !!! 😉

You can get (1) to happen most of the time. (2) happens only when people are motivated, and that’s infrequent. If we were, in general, all over crappy BLAST results in preprints in the same way as this coronavirus paper, there’d be about 30% less literature.

I know most of the job market advice on here says to not think of rejection as a knock against your self-worth, but after so much rejection and waiting, it's hard not to conflate the two.

I am concerned and annoyed that the authors did not bother to do a simple blast, but rather only looked for viruses and then pick the similarity to hiv. Not even to mention the highly suggestive wording of their conclusions.

Thank you for this important study of honorees and keynotes, including the finding that "the lack of Asian scientists among keynote speakers and Fellows was particularly pronounced when compared against the field-specific background".

Had annual physical. All the same recommendation (eat heathier and exercise more). But just dawned on me that home-made food is not the same as eating at home ...

I am a judge today for a high school science fair and was just reviewing posters. About half described their data as being problematic for drawing conclusions for various reasons (small sample size, inaccurate instrument measurement, etc.) If only my colleagues were this honest.

This is why I don't base my participation grades on how much a student talks in class. I talked a lot in class! I had rarely done the actual readings but I was very good at putting together information quickly so I could sound like I had.

No player supported the or women’s college basketball more than Kobe. He attended games, watched on tv, coached the next generation. We pray for his family.

Modeling tenacity did not necessarily meant succeeding. But until this date I still believe that if one works hard, one will find a niche in one's chosen craft. The saddest thing of is: apparently there are some things that are out of our control, that hard work cannot overcome.

I've heard similar lines of narrative describing Kobe, back in the early 2000s (from broadcasters, Stu Lantz, if my memory serves me right). In many ways, it is modeling after Kobe's tenacity that fueled me through my transition to grad school in the mid- to late 2000s.

"Kobe was never the biggest, the fastest, the strongest or the springiest. Vince Carter jumped higher. Allen Iverson was quicker. Tracy McGrady was taller and longer. What lifted Kobe above them all was his intense drive and absolute focus."
