Hey, I did a TED talk a while ago, and now it's online. Thanks to , , & all the TED people for letting me do something a bit different in tone and subject, and for helping me put it together:

Boy, I've seen a lotta these signs as I drive around the rural NW. Fire is a growth industry here, I'm guessing.

Last night, Stanwood, WA. I'm no expert, but everyone around was startled to hear the chorus of herps this far north on Feb. 1.

Fine piece from the estimable about what would be, if climate change didn't exist, our worst environmental problem--the vast amounts of nitrogen we are dumping into air and water.

In its way, this tweet, with its accompanying picture, is a thing of beauty--a near-perfect specimen of its type.

Long ago, as this article reminded me, a pal told me that you can never have characters in a novel act as stupidly as people do in real life.

Is Jeanine Cummins Latina enough to write “American Dirt”? In 1984 John Gregory Dunne explored (in ) more interesting case of a once-blacklisted Anglo screenwriter who published (under the pseudonym “Danny Santiago”) a lauded novel of barrio life:

No matter how often I experience it, I'm still grateful for the obsessive care and attention of the Atlantic's copy team. These tiny infelicities are like barely audible pops of static in readers' heads, and it's wonderful to have people help you spot them before they build up.

Yikes. African-American in Detroit sues his finance-agency employer for racial discrimination, wins ~$100K. Goes to deposit checks--his bank refuses, calls 4 cops. Guy leaves, opens new account at 2nd bank, deposits checks 1hr later--and sues 1st bank:

Facebook: it's like a publisher, except way bigger, recklessly incompetent, and protected by special legal exemptions that the likes of Random House can only dream about.

Yesterday: new study says some of what I wrote in "1491" is wrong--pre-contact New England WASN'T heavily human-altered: Now reminds me 1 yr ago another study lk'd at similar evidence w/ opposite conclusion:

I don't know. But a similar dispute in the Amazon has seen some adjustment on both sides. This study is also only New England--other studies have, to the best of my knowledge, confirmed modification to the South and west. Anyway, I'm excited to see what happens next.

Interesting! But the historical evidence--fragmentary but extensive-- assembled by Cronon, Pyne, etc. is still there. As are the oral traditions and (sometimes disputed) archaeological findings. How to reconcile the two?

Interesting new Nature study says some of what I reported on in "1491" is wrong: New England, they say, was NOT heavily marked by the human presence pre -1620.

Amazing how successful this NYTimes branding stunt has been. With a few cheap videos they've managed to turn a routine annual bout of puffery--the political endorsement--into something that otherwise intelligent people are frothing about.
