  1. Spent the last 4 hours trying to catch up with work emails after starting my workday at 7 AM this morning without a break. Teaching an active learning course to 750 students has officially broken my inbox. If you really need to get a hold of me, try again sometime next year.

Science is exciting! But not all the time. I think it sometimes surprises students how much time is spent in highly repetitive tasks to obtain those exciting results. Hours counting, staring down microscopes, measuring. Cheers to all you hardworking and patient scientists!

Today I got a gloating email in the face of from someone who has been critical of the field of Animal Personality. They suggested this Is the end of the discipline. Here is an excerpt of my response: [1/5]

Our new paper is online! Based on 22 years of data and 732,835 fatal accidents, we show that the spring DST transition increases fatal accident risk by 6%. Risk estimates are higher for mornings and positions further west in a time zone!

One of the cool things about living in Orlando: being able to witness historical rocket launches from your own backyard. And on my birthday nonetheless.

Is it too soon in the semester to be depending entirely on caffeine? Only the second week of teaching my active learning redesign of General Biology 2 (660 students) and I'm already running on fumes.

But I think a lot of us don't idolize a workaholic lifestyle, we just get crushed by the ever-increasing administrative burdens placed on faculty. Free administrative labor has costs in terms of faculty time and mental well-being.

For example, in both studies the evidence shows strong upregulation of putative enterotoxins and an aflatrem-like compound in the fungus. Or, dysregulation of elements tied to the circadian clock and neuronal signaling pathways in the ant. (4/4)

Using these data we speculate on possible scenarios of how our findings are implicated in the mechanisms of host manipulation, paying special attention to mechanisms shared across species of Ophiocordyceps and Camponotus, as compared to an earlier study (de Bekker 2015). (3/4)

With this early draft of the manuscript, we offer food for thought on how Ophiocordyceps fungi can infect and behaviorally modify Camponotus ants. Our data include a long-/short-read Ophiocordyceps genome assembly and transcriptomes of both host and parasite. (2/4)
