"Dishonesty is never random. Underneath our lies are unmet needs that we believe lying might satisfy. Identifying these needs is the first step to finding healthier ways to fulfill them." So well put! Great piece by for

In my column at today, I discuss Nathan Ballantyne's book KNOWING OUR LIMITS (), in relation to the question of why academic philosophy isn't more concerned with the task of improving how people live.

I’ve long harbored a worry that gratitude, while nudging people to be cooperative, might make them complacent and ripe for ongoing exploitation. Nope! It makes them expect and enforce better behavior from everyone.

This was a wonderful experience that I was fortunate to be a part of in 2019! If you work on anything even close to these areas (ethics and philosophy of religion), I highly recommend that you submit! Or, you know, don't (so that my submission won't compete with yours! 😉)

Public discourse is full of outrage, but it's not always noble. People often express outrage to alleviate feelings of guilt or to buffer their self-image as morally impressive people. Selfish uses of outrage make it a less reliable signal of injustice.

My student killed a motorcyclist in an accident. It destroyed him. He dropped out of school. Severe depression. Want to know what pulled him out of it? The parents of the man he killed. They asked him to meet for dinner. He goes now once a year. Forgiveness is healing.

A toxic misogynist troll left a blog comment about one of my pieces that I should "stop taking up space in the NYT." Some issues, I should refrain from taking up space. On others, like , I'm going to claim it.
