    Part of the difficulty of ML in healthcare is getting computer science people and medicine people to speak the same language to learn from each other. Distribution shift is spectrum bias Precision is positive predictive value Recall is sensitivity Test set is external validation

    This is probably the most critical issue overall for ML in healthcare. Even more worrisome is the lack of understanding of this statistical concept and these ML definitions by the medical community.

    New paper on online at Nature (spoiler: it appears to have evolved from a very closely related bat coronavirus, not from the lab of Dr. Evil, and enters human cells using the same receptor as 2003 SARS).

    Thank you David. Here, they have just showed nCoV-2019 is 96% identical at the whole-genome level to a bat coronavirus (definitely evolutionary poised ;-)). Also, it uses ACE2 to entry cells as SARS-CoV.

    Just checked their results. The similarity is spurious. Out of 4 inserts they identify between NCov and SARS, 2 are found in bat coronavirus. Of the remaining two, only one is most similar to HIV, and is so short (6 AA) that the similarity is not higher than chance given database

    The mere claim that such short inserts support nCoV origins "unlikely to be fortuitous in nature" [sic] is already highly suspect. This is a classic case of searching for lost keys only under a lamppost. A fearful world does not need to fuel conspiracy theories with bad analyses.
