I'm not sure I see how yelling at his kids would be verbally abusive. When you're mad at them, are you going to use nice language and a "talking" voice? Someone care to enlighten me, please?

It isn't abusive in all cases but you should explain what was wrong w/what the child did in a steady calm tone unless they won't listen. Naturally yelling is understandable if you can't get through to your child, but "you're pissing me off" to a toddler is too much.
