I agree, standard array is fair, but rolling is fun. I'd much rather have the chance that someone needs to figure out how to play their character with a couple of 3/4's and make it fun for the story.
I think campaign length is something to also consider. If its going to be a year+ commitment, having so much riding on 5 mins of dice rolls just does not sit right with me. For a one off adventure that will only last 1-2 nights I’m more open to anything goes!

I think you just resign yourself to knowing that your 4 Str Wizard is just going to need to have someone else open up the heavy door, or in our guys case, an entirely different party. :P
