It's really best, if you have a friend or guide walking you through the basics when you start. After that, it's much more enjoyable. There are many 'gotcha's' where there are bugs and often work-arounds that you might not know to try.
For example, in the Skyline 'star map' if you double click your right mouse button, it'll reset it to view the whole system. Sometimes you have to do that, because of the bad camera clipping where you can't see what you want to see.

Or after arriving at a planet, you can't actually quantum directly to your location, you have to jump to another local point first before it will register you're at that planet/hub.

Or if you're trying to quantum and it's finished spooling up and calculating but won't let you jump, just move off and then back on, (let it calculate again) and often you'll be able to jump just fine (where before it wasn't).

Yeah, that 'insider info' blew my mind when someone told me about it. Don't get me wrong the Skyline/star map/navigation is one of the reasons I don't want to recommend the game to people -- because it's so bad and so frustrating to use. Some day maybe they'll improve it.
