Corporations were created as a means of protecting people from the consequences of their actions. The government creates and supports a legal entity that allows citizens to take risks without shouldering the full burden if something goes wrong. 1/8

This led to an explosion of innovation that fueled generations of prosperity. It also worked best during those generations where the government counterbalanced it with rules that held those corporations back from going to seed and descending into wild feudalism. 2/8

But fundamentally, just like universal healthcare and publicly-funded college, it is the government stepping in to free people by providing a service and protecting them from misfortune. Why don’t we treat all three of these as different sides of the same prosperity plan? 3/8

For some reason, many Americans view universal health care and education as immoral handouts that treats people like children ... while viewing the programs that allowed Donald Trump to bankrupt business after business while walking away with his personal fortune ... 4/8

... as the most natural and healthy thing in the world. Really, though, they all do the same thing. They all free people to take risks. When you don’t depend on your job for health care, you can strike out on your own. 5/8

When you know you can afford college, you study the thing you’re great at, and aren’t saddled with decades of debt. When you know you can share the risk with your investors, you’re willing to go all-in on a crazy new idea. 6/8
