I want to start by saying i very much enjoyed 1917. & i have a question... Beyond the technical wizardry of not cutting, did it add anything to the film? Cutting is like punctuation. It’s a tool that can be as creative as the content. Dare i ask, was it a gimmick in this case?
Working in games (specifically on gameplay cameras), we’ve learned that cutting can be disorienting. It can detract from a moment. Of course you can do things to help the cut succeed, but I think the inverse is equally true. Not cutting can increase immerse and presence.
