    1) After the election of 1876 between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel Tilden, there were disputed electors from Florida, Louisana, South Carolina and Oregon. Congress created an “Electoral Commission” to determine how to parse out the electoral votes from these states.

        2) Congress would ultimately accept or reject those results from the Electoral Commission. In those days, the Electoral College was smaller. The Electoral Commission awarded all contested electoral votes to Hayes, making him President.

        3) Hayes received 185 electoral votes to 185 electoral votes for Tilden.   The coalition of GOP senators questionint the integrity of the Electoral College is calling for the creation of a similar committee today.

        4) Hayes had 185 electoral votes. Tilden clocked in at 184 after the Electoral Commission was complete and Congress accepted the results
