Two weeks ago when @GovWhitmer ordered non-essential workers to stay home, the death count was SEVEN. As of yesterday morning, it was 540. And yet the GOP-run Legislature is forging ahead with an in-person session vote Tuesday. Consider me wary of this. https://www.crainsdetroit.com/voices-chad-livengood/unlike-other-public-bodies-legislature-forges-ahead-plan-vote-person …pic.twitter.com/UADV4p5axB

Since I filed this column Friday afternoon for the @crainsdetroit print edition, House Democratic Leader @ChrisGreigMI37 and Speaker @LeeChatfield have traded letters about Tuesday's session & the need for an immediate extension of gov's emergency powers.https://twitter.com/ChadLivengood/status/1246480576636432387 …

INBOX: Mich. House Democratic Leader @ChrisGreigMI37 has sent GOP Speaker @LeeChatfield a letter expressing her "grave concerns" about holding session Tuesday in the middle of the #COVID19 pandemic to pass a resolution on @GovWhitmer's that's "insufficient...and legally dubious." pic.twitter.com/hjQOm2nWKV

What this crisis is revealing is the Michigan Legislature as an institution has never really contemplated meeting remotely or the idea that there could be a hidden threat to the health, safety and well being of members and their staff while working under the Capitol dome.

Here’s Speaker @LeeChatfield’s plan to hold House session Tuesday at the Capitol. Health & temp screenings for all reps. Older reps, those w/ health condition, #COVID19 symptomatic or reps who have been in contact w/ some w/ coronavirus “strongly encouraged to stay home.”pic.twitter.com/pg2ehFJ53U

I hope members just refuse to show up. And I hope the sergeants and clerks stay home, too. If the GOP wants to be irrational, they can just infect each other.

I don’t see why they can’t legislate from home. Students learn from home everyday.

Seems like a virtual Visual roll call vote and written submission (paper ballot) would work just fine.

In my opinion do not change the 1969 constitution under these circumstances when the public can not attend any public feedback meetings. That would leave the potential for lost rights ripe for the taking!

If a grocery clerk isn't there, people can't get food (even w self checkout, people often need help, someone needs to clean the machines, stock the food, etc). There is 0 reason why discussions & votes could not happen remotely. All essential tasks are replicable electronically.
