It's odd. As the dad of a Down Syndrome person I notice that sometimes even friends use this as a disparaging term. It's surprising in this PC era how many think such terms are acceptable and, in the Left's case, even funny. Our last President even made a Special Olympics "joke."

They most likely didn’t understand his accent and just clapped anyway, even though they didn’t have a clue what he was saying, just because he was an immigrant. Not sure what’s worse to be honest.
