I agree with you, but it's not like they aren't paid right now. They're paid in many ways. It should all be open and exposed tho, not under-the-counter deals like currently.pic.twitter.com/cVrSAw1ZFj

The only players with market value are the one excluded from NFL by a collective bargaining agreement. Everyone else is interchangeable. The brand is the value.
i don't understand how collective bargaining hasn't destroyed this already
Should we even have colleges play the role of stepping stone between amateur and professional sports? Aren't there enough communications majors out there?
Fair market value is whatever the kids will accept. The real issue is a monopoly eliminates competition. If they had a minor league like in baseball or allowed kids to go straight to pro like basketball then it wouldn’t be an issue. Kids could choose scholarship vs money.
Colleges would then be forced to offer more or deal with an inferior product.
Or...a kid decides to forgo college and goes to a minor league, doesn't cut it and misses out on a full ride scholarship...has to deliver pizzas pay his/her own way through college or don't go period. Colleges are already offering a pretty attractive deal, really.
Oh yeah. A lot of that would happen. The kids who choose Harvard or Stanford are the ones who are really getting their value. Schools like USC and ND are also good due to the alumni networking. I think a lot of people forget, that college football is more than the top 40 teams.
Absolutely. Add to that the other college athletics programs that offer scholarships also. Expenses paid and most basic needs are taken care of. Athletes from financially deprived backgrounds can also receive pell grant funds. Still a great opportunity.
Is the drafting system of nba and nfl fair? Players drafted at the top have to play for the teams that drafted them for at most 4 years under a contract that is far below their market value.
I agree. The only athletes that would be paid are high end D1 football and basketball players. I doubt any other sports turn a profit, espically a large one that would allow for players to be paid.
The way athletes are left behind from injuries leads me to stand on paying these athletes fair market value. That’s just an opinion - please do share yours more on this.
For only a few sports. Most don’t make money.
the amount of revenue they bring in they should be making 100-200k a year
Someone needs to take a closer look at how the universities run the construction and operation of stadiums and training facilities. Using activity fees is common. Pushing up the cost of tuition for the entire student body that doesn’t use said facilities.
Not only that but they are prevented from making money off of their likeness and image That is the exact anthesis of a capitalism
Yup. Not to mention haven't we spent the last five years or so, in particular, recognizing the fact that college is often a massive waste of money? So forget that the amount discounted is not equivalent to their works worth, how about the fact that they are discounting a lemon?
They should get paid a base salary. In addition a bonus should be paid based on revenue from attire sales and advertising.
There are players who made the financial and career decisions to play overseas as they would get paid for it and do not have to do other things like schoolwork. College ball is useless if you want to be a paid pro.
