Mike, those players earn a greater share of revenue, in the form of scholarships, than Professional MMA fighters make, in pay. Yet no one gives a shit about the fighters.

I've been watching the bloody elbow reports/analysis of UFC and MMA practices and cuts/shares/historic payouts over the period as the case(s) progress.

There’s a lot of major D1 schools whose athletic departments are in massive debt. Some end up in the black because of donor contributions. Basically charity on top of buying season tickets. Take away the donor subsidy and how many schools make a profit?
-
If the athletics program runs at a deficit, do the student athletes want to take on the debt? If they want to be partners on the upside, should be partners on downside too right?
-
most people don't understand the economics of this. Most athletic departments operate at a loss every year. Schools paying players would cause the shutdown of many sports, losses of scholarship opportunities, and debt passed on to student body resulting in higher tuitions
-
Football doesn’t make sense financially for many schools. Look at UCONN. I think they’re getting shut down. And UConn has a decent amount of $$ at their disposal. Imagine some of C-USA schools in the South.
-
100% correct. Even Cal was prepared to shut down their baseball team a few years ago due to mismanaged funds. Schools paying players would magnify these issues 100x. As usual, most people don't think of consequences and effects
-
I say keep everything the same but allow the athletes to market their likenesses. Allow them to do appearances and autographs. Anyone. Football. Field hockey. Whatever. Let the market decide what they’re worth.
-
Agree. This opens loopholes for booster payments but i think it’s good middle ground. I would add a rule saying money goes into an escrow account until a year after their freshman class graduates

Then they need to say good bye to scholarships and start paying for their classes and travel.
-
Which is fine if they are making the money they are earning.
-
Correct then it is fine its seen as a job. Just like a lot of college kids. But I've talked to some college athletes and they want to keep scholarship and get paid.
-
Then tuition can be deducted like my health insurance
-
I think you're onto something here. Interesting take
-
They would take it

They're getting paid with a scholarship and a college degree

Maybe just don't do sports in colleges at all? We could have local sports leagues instead, it'd work out better for everyone

Conservatives HAVED talked about it. We just haven't came to the same conclusion. Walsh has a strong bent away from college in general, and tweeted his lack of interest in college football right before he took up this soapbox. I think he just likes to work people up.
-
And dang it! I muted him so I didn't have to hear it and then you retweeted him?! Look, those players are living it up. They are not deprived in the slightest. It's capitalism at its finest. If you want to compensate with a paycheck FINE. TAKE THE SCHOLARSHIPS AWAY.
