No fission bomb would make a dent. Enough MT from a thermonuclear device could disrupt internal circulation for 8 hours. Either one would distribute the radioactive byproducts into the entire system making a Manga-style radioactive hurricane. Would be awesome.

My "back-of-the-envelope" calculation for Hurricane Andrew is that the energy required to evacuate it's eye to its landfal eye pressure of 922 mbar is roughly 10^17 megatons of TNT. At it's peak in 1967 the entire U.S. nuclear arsenal was less than 30,000 * 10 = 3*10^5 Megatons
-
In other words, the energy packed by Hurricane Andrew was roughly 3 trillion times greater than the entire U.S. nuclear arsenal in 1967.
-
We obviously need myth buster to get right on this. For “further evaluation.”
-
The magnitude is really in getting the conversion from millibar-liter to megaton correct - which I did carefully to minimize the chance of an error. After that - the pressure difference and eye size are well known values, easily googled.
-
How would the radiation output be at an altitude of about 30,000-50,000 feet.
-
It doesn't matter. We don't have the capability to affect a major storm. The Pentagon toyed in the 1960's with possibly disrupting the eyewall by firing *dozens* of missiles up into the eye from submarines - but abandoned it as too expensive for a one-time long shot.

Create a vacuum collapsing the eye. Stopping rotation.
