America for the most part was already built before WWI and WWII, otherwise we would not have able to enter either war. America's ability to enter the wars was our industrial capacity and capabilities. Our createst resource was Capitalists, ingenuity, and intellectual savyness...

US army was 269k before joining the war nearly 7 million at the end. 3 functioning aircraft carriers at battle of midway, 36 at the end. 3000 airplanes in production in 1939. 300000 planes were produced at the end. Massive difference. WW2 definitely created a behemoth!!

We didnt have to rebuild, true...but watching Scorsese's Mean Streets again is a good reminder to how dirty NYC was, even in the 1970s... People who see gentrified plastic bubble wrapped USA and think "slavery must have built this" have to watch more old movies

The ramping up of production and the ingenuity and teamwork needed to retool the assembly lines to make tanks, planes and bombs; built Americas character. The effort, united Americans of all walks of life. That was patriotism.

The the industrialization spawned by the American Civil War, produced a half century long explosion of economic growth. Ending slavery built America.

Slavery in the US made a handful of families super wealthy. However, the global slave trade made those who owned the slave ships the wealthiest of all. Who owned those ships? Who owned them? Surely somebody knows that answer.
-
Of course, those who know the answer often fear the repercussions of discussing it.

Mike one complain I have with economics students in America is that many don’t study Econ history..the data is clear from 1880s .. though it is true that the World Wars destroyed European countries ..

Slavery didn’t make America, a hundred years of high tariffs did.

Arguably it was WWI, and it fully blossomed following WWII, as reflected in the economic power shift of Bretton Woods

This is 100% true. We weren’t that different than Australia is today pre-WW2. Large economy, rich in natural resources, and respected, but no one was calling early presidents “leader of the free world” until after the last world war.

Also, the UK voted in Labor, which of course hobbled their economy.
