  If you don't qualify for a federal loan, you have to get a co-signer with a private loan. If you qualify for a direct subsidized federal loan, no co-signer is needed. Direct unsubsidized loans are available too. Direct PLUS (grad students) are subject to credit history.

  My parents didn't. Of course that was in 94'. I got $5k for two semesters. Dropped out after 1 1/2 and it took me 6 years to pay it off.

  PLUS loans are parental loans and don't have the dollar limits on them that federal loans have. They also belong to the parents.
