Barbary pirates captured & enslaved thousands of Americans as well. Some men were castrated or killed. Women & girls forced to be sex slaves. US paid a jizya to Algeria - 16% of our fed budget at the time - to try & keep our citizens safe. It didn’t work, so the US Navy was born.
