I can explain, hopefully. It should even be applicable to today’s issues. Unlike simple speech, this is fundamentally a boycott movement. A number of times, I have brought up the Magna Carta, the root of English Common Law, and one the foundations of our legal system. 1/

One of the more interesting features is that it protects both life AND livelihood. All boycott movements, including those we see on-line, are an assault on one’s livelihood. This should be as protected as life. So, again, BDS is not simply speech. /fin

#BDS is far more than hate speech. It is a movement to essentially defund Israel until eventually they’re wiped off the map either financially or worse. -
Exactly!

It's a projection of power. Nothing more.

The fact that someone as sharp as you has this take shows how thin the concept of hate speech has become. So many things can be overinterpreted as mean, and “hate” itself is almost never defined

as long as there is a subjectively acceptable viewpoint limited to a group, and that group can hold power over speech, and that group an rise to positions of power, there will always be speech that is not allowed.

I think I'd consider it to be somewhat like stopping ethnic hate and based on religion. Would be about the same if we saw a campaign to cut off all tax payer funding or donations to Historic Black Universities. There would only be one reason for a sick campaign like that. Hate!

Add a dash of sophistry and most laws could be classified as hate speech laws. Of course, nearly all modern political discourse and even our legislative process are predicated upon sophistry, so that’s not surprising. With they said, you are correct.

Folks, this isn’t that difficult. A boycott can not exist without speech. When you make a law banning the boycott, you ban speech. Now here’s the sophistry-or casuistry if you prefer. If you say you hate that which is being banned, it is a “hate speech” law.

Anti BDS laws aren’t necessarily a priority of mine, but if say a college like mine boycotted Israel, then Israeli academics would not be able to attend conferences here.

It’s circumvents US foreign policy with an ALLIE. The same way you can’t introduce legislation to boycott France, Germany, Canada. They’re allies and trading partners. The US would break your alliance and treaty agreements with them
