He reminds me of my ex, who would fight anyone at any chance he got, including me & my kids. Someone who acts like that has anger issues. And people with anger issues can be extremely abusive. A person willing to make threats to harm like that, in front of their kids, is abusive.

And from what I know, these are the types that defend women in public to be "tough" and then go home and verbally abuse/hit their wives or girlfriends.
