Growing up, a friend’s dad made $18 an hour at the meat packing plant. This was in the 1990’s. Those were hard jobs but good jobs and Americans worked them.https://twitter.com/SenatorDurbin/status/1160232445888929792 …

Jobs processing meat and poultry are hot, dirty, monotonous, and dangerous. Across America immigrants have always taken these jobs. ICE raids should focus on those who are a threat to our safety, not those who work hard every day to put food on our tables.

the dems have always been the party of cheap immigrated labor and stoking racial division. The goals are the same but only the tactics have changed. #changemymind

And $18 in the early 90s is earning ~$36/hr today. This is how the working middle class was decimated in both rural and urban communities...corporations looking to cut labor costs.

My husband started working in a pickle factory at 14 and later spent 20 years at a lumber mill. He made less than $20 for all of it. It was hard but good work. It was hot, dirty, monotonous, and dangerous. He enjoys the abundance we have now so much more because of those years.

        That's right, Mike. $18.00 p/hour in 1990 is $35.28 p/hour in 2019. That's 70K per year, without overtime and benefits.

a lot of these new jobs in the economy are being achieved through the lowering of wages or working sub 40hrs. Everyone talks quantity but never quality. Populism left or right is going to get alot bigger in the future.

I grew up in upstate NY. Poultry plants, slaughter houses or military. A man could raise a family and own a home. Dont want to hear about illegals. Those same families today...sons dead from opiods. The survivors work at Walmart/Walgreen's to eek a 2 bedroom apt.

@SenatorDurbin, you’re missing the point. As long as #IllegalImmigrants are allowed to work in these facilities, probably for cash at below living wages, Americans can’t afford to do that work.

going even further than that: this policy equates to support jobs for illegal immigrants over legal immigrants!

My Grandparents worked in those plants back in the day before they got outsourced to illegals for lower wages. Both companies and illegals should be punished for doing this to American citizens.

You know what makes American citizens want to take those jobs? It is called paying a high enough wage to make it worth the effort. Meaning without these immigrants they would actually have to pay a living wage.
