What's the alternative? To send the children to jail with them?

It really depends.. did they speed? Jaywalk? Intentionally put their own or other children in harm? Murder? Rape? Tax evasion? Put their trash can out too early? Water their lawn on the wrong day? It really depends. This is too blanket a question.

What type of law? Parents (especially single parents) go to jail and become separated from their children.

They already ARE separated when arrested and imprisoned. What's your point??

Ok. Just figured that the followup is that they get separated at the border, which if adults break the law, it is part of what they risk.

Depends on the laws. But NO. Has this been determined by a court? Was it a traffic violation? What laws?

Not for inherently non-violent crimes. But even if you don't have children you shouldn't be locked away for those
