Background checks don't prevent a person from "snapping" at a later date! Mass shooters that make the headlines are usually "the one no-one suspected" ! Not a preventative! (Anyone who would FAIL a background check will just get a gun illegally!)

If the government is worried about gun crime then why haven’t they disarmed criminal gangs? In fact, why did the Obama administration participate in gun running with Mexican Cartels? Gun control is a dog whistle for disarming law abiding citizens. Nothing less.
