Media outlets sell ads based on interviews given to them for free.
Reporters and executives earn salaries.

I confess to being surprised that half the public doesn’t realize the news is a commercial enterprise, while the Interface app would typically be used without charge in cases such as this.

I’ve been thinking about it: why wouldn’t I want to broadcast my own interview rather than have a media company be able to pick, edit, and manipulate what I witnessed into whatever story they want to construct. I’d rather have control over my story than them.

Absolutely. How is selling pictures to the media any different from selling testimony? If you have something valuable and unique, put a price on it. The media is profiting from this. But in court, you should of course do it for free.

IMO - A better approach could have been to remind that the app is free and may be of use to victims/families... and offer a message of concern, if not perhaps a charitable offering of some sort. The wording felt very self serving... and again, I like Scott. Just being honest.

Scott would only take a fee if the witnesses charged a fee, and he expects and recommends them not to (just as CNN's on-the-spot witnesses don't get paid by CNN). It's all fake outrage.
