Hi Mike. I'm co-founder of Wikipedia and CIO of Everipedia, but take a great interest in this topic. See my "How and Why I Taught My Toddler to Read." I used the same method with both my boys, now aged 13 and 8: http://larrysanger.org/2010/12/baby-reading/ …

They were both reading picture books at age 2 and easy chapter books at age 3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIu8BGFqMm4 …https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wmlOkiOo08 …

The 13-year-old recently finished reading both the Iliad and the Odyssey by Homer. The 8-year-old has been reading Treasure Island and others well beyond his age level.

The most effective advice I can give you is to read as much as you can to your kids while they're very young, and let them see the pages as you read; run your fingers under the words as you read (this is very important).

Also important: read lots of ABC books and pronounce the letters. (Don't just say "A, A, Apple," say "A, A, A is for aaaa, as in aaaaapple.") Lots of good videos and apps do the same. Use them.

"Your Baby Can Read" isn't bullshit. It's real and it works, but only as long as you accompany your program with other things like reading a lot to your kids. Also, ALWAYS follow their lead. NEVER force them. This is very important.

There are so many things to try, if they don't like one thing on one day, you can try something else. A lot of the time they're not reacting to "learning" but to the particular thing you're trying to do. Kids love to learn. But teach them to say "That's enough."

As far as actual books go, it depends on the kid. Let the kid be your guide. The more choices the better.

I don't have kids, but I myself learned to read from the Swedish version of Sesame street (5 ants outnumber 4 elephants), and proceeded to read Arabian Nights by myself before I turned 5. I think game play, humor, interactive video is a very good complement to reading with yr chldr
