Why is insulin so expensive?

When I first started practicing pharmacy in the 70s insulin was sourced from pork or beef pancreases. A vial was about 3 to 4 $$. Now human insulin, recombinant is created in the lab. It should actually be cheaper to produce.

My son (12) is a type 1 diabetic. It’s a struggle.
-
I just had a guy at work (we have great benefits) tell me he buys his insulin on the black market due to cost. I had no idea this was a thing. Why?
-
They know people NEED insulin to survive. So they jack up the prices on it because they know people will buy it. It’s disgusting. Makes me want to vomit.
-
I guess I was unaware the number of people in demand was so high. I’m typically anti-government intervention, but if it’s not a supply issue isn’t that the same as gouging? Which is already illegal I believe.

Canadian physician Frederick Banting discovered the hormone insulin in 1921. He knew it would be life saving so gave it up for free. What other countries do by charging for it is criminal!

The mortality rate seems understudied. In the stuff I looked at, there didn't seem to be a mortality bump at 26 (or the ones that contain that group), but there wasn't a whole lot of it that focused on it. The story would have been stronger with some discussion of that

There are strict regulations on the manufacture of insulin. The govt. agents believe they are protecting insulin users from receiving sub-standard insulin. They probably do not realize that their safety restrictions cause shortages and high prices.

Insulin would get exceedingly cheaper if demand was lessened. Remove the demand by eating much better.

Type 1 is much more serious and a disease for life than Type 2 which often can be brought under control with diet changes. I learned a lot of diabetes bc my Savannah cat got sick. I could not save him. It is very hard to regulate.
-
Agree but most diabetes in America is type 1. Sorry for your cat

It is possible to buy insulin via mail from Canada which is about half the price than here in US.

My mother here in Aus pays 90 dollars for a *three month* supply of *both* fast acting and slow acting insulin. Literally a grocery bag full for less than $100. America has no excuse.
-
We subsidize AU and other countries.
