No way. Lived there. Far too many problems with infrastructure, amenities, services, quality of life, and environment.

I've been to Chiang Mai. I loved it. It felt like the most peaceful place I'd ever been in my life.

You should visit more places. Koh Phangan is way more peaceful.

I'll keep that in mind! Might be awhile before I get to make a trip like that again.

Island life is always different of course. But there is a special vibe on that island that goes back a long time. It's one of the foundations of psychedelic culture in Asia. It's gotten way more popular in recent years but still has an authentic village vibe in many places.

Chiang Mai was cool ten years ago. It's changed. Three month smoke season. Traffic, Chinese hordes and "digital nomads" everywhere.

As someone who is thinking about moving to Chiang Mai when I retire, I can say 1) Cost of living is much lower than the U.S. You can get by nicely on $1500 - $2000/month. 2) No winter 3) World class medical facilities 4) The best food in the world

Although you don't want to be there during the burning season-especially March and April, when I hear the air pollution from burning the rice fields gets really intense.
