The city and police could have prevented this from happening had they intervened to stop the confrontation that occurred. Not sure why they stood down and let this happen.

I hope one of the lessons here, is to NOT "protest" in the middle of a street that's not closed off to cars. I've seen videos of people in the middle of an active freeway trying to block cars. Not a good idea.

better lesson is that pedestrians get the right of way. especially if they have a permit to be there.

The "protesters" in the street didn't have a permit.
If they grant you a permit, the cops shut down that part of the street designated in your permit.
In my 68 years, I've NEVER stepped onto a road expecting the cars to stop for me.
I always wait till the road is clear.

No. Death is an easy out and carrying out the sentence damages everyone involved.

Last year in Japan, they executed 6 or 7 of the cultists responsible for the subway gassing. It was done on a single day, in the same prison, more than a decade after the fact. I imagine that would have taken a tremendous toll on everyone involved.
