I agree. When you know someone that struggles with real mental illness it is frustrating just to hear people even refer to being depressed or OCD or whatever flippant term they use.

If this is the same Jean Carroll I'm thinking of, she wrote a bio. of Hunter Thompson which I read. I came away from it with the impression that she was more unhinged than he'd ever been; there was something very *wrong*/off-kilter about her occasional imitations of his style.

Like it was an oral history of HST's life, but I recall 'Gonzo' passages written from the POV of a nubile, slightly dumb female academic who had been lured to his house under false pretenses and was being forced to compile these people's stories while chained up in his basement.
