As someone who supports student loan debt reform, this is an issue we must be prepared to discuss. How is it moral to give relief to those who went to an overpriced college but not to so many others who could use the money responsibly?https://twitter.com/MattWalshBlog/status/1143245661380448256 …

Okay then. If we cancel student debt, I want reparations. I didn't go to college because I couldn't afford it. I've been paying off my wife's loans for 8 years. I want the money I put into my wife's loans back, and I want financial compensation for forgoing a degree.

Quick way to eliminate the student debt crisis is to make colleges co-sign for 10% of their students’ loans. $40k loans for Masters of Puppet History will disappear.

Correct. Moreover I guess those who spent the last 5-10 years to pay off a mortgage, car loan and also studens loans, would have been better off to pay off only the mortgage/vehicle.

Why, in all of this college debt talk, no politician ever talks about why college is so damn expensive? They are just interested in the symptoms, but never address the problem (and will exacerbate the issue by pumping more government money into the broken system). It's a racket.

I would put the weight of the responsibility on those people that told these kids to go to college to get a degree they didn’t need and couldn’t afford. My teachers told me joining the Navy was the biggest mistake of my life. My pension at 38 is bigger than most of their pay.

Everyone should pay what they contractually committed themselves to pay. Just like a home mortgage or car loan.

Same thing with "needs based repayment" which sometimes comes up Why should Gina with the green hair who majored in gender studies get a free pass because her degree leads to nothing while my engineering cousin doesn't because she made a wise choice?

New rule: student debt can now be discharged if it can be established that you're hopeless to pay it back. Force creditors to accept some of this risk. That, in turn, forces them to assess to whom they're lending (and it will have other good effects longer than 240char)

This is the answer and I’ve been saying this for years. It gives a way out to the hopelessly indebted. Loan money for degrees that don’t get jobs will dry up and college costs will come down. Win win win

If tuition becomes free and loan forgiveness is the new norm, what will stop people from becoming permanent students? An easy life forever. Living on-campus, free housing, and no incentive to move on in life. Not a future worth going towards

Student loan forgiveness is not about morality, you see, it is about rewarding bad decisions and reinforcing their consequences in perpetuity.

Agreed. You shouldn't be able to declare bankruptcy on student loans. It is unjust, and theft as well. -Albert Fairfax II

Im about personal accountability but if theres nething we can blame on "society" its the inflation of the higher ed bubble. Ppl buy into the meme bc theyr brainwashed, public schools, govt media etc. Were all complicit. Despite falling for the scam, im sure most are responsbile

The ONLY student loan reform El Patriota supports is getting rid of the interest rates applied to them. Other than that, you borrowed it, you pay it! Teach today's kids some discipline in an age of entitlements Yup

I went to a college I could afford and picked a major that had a future. Too many go and get fluff degrees that result in low paying jobs with no future. My nephew is going to a trade school to learn welding, will make over $75k and no real debt.
