So my mom is in an mental institution and will probably live out the rest of her life there. Not a way I wanted to start off a thread, but my family has seen America's mental health system inside and out, and maybe others deal with these problems. Here goes....
Whenever I talk about mental illness and issues around it, so many messages come in from people struggling but who can’t say it because it would cause a job loss, social stigma, or other consequence. We are very immature as a society when it comes to mental health.
People have even tried using my mom’s mental illness against me, even liberal “reporters.” But I’m the guy you can’t publicly shame, and they still try. I can’t imagine what regular people with mental health obstacles face.

True! after being honest about y I began missing work,along with Dr notes my job of 7 yrs dismissed me instantly and refused to give any sort of references.
1 on 10 mental health professionals worth seeing. The good ones are booked up and don't take insurance.
Shocks me given the depth and detail you share on this thread that you support this administration who clearly plan and have a goal to cut Medicaid and Medicare. Preexisting mental health protection elimination will shatter the fragile mental health system cobbled together poorly
Some progress have been made because more people are having issues. Hopefully more progress will continue in the treating of mental health illnesses.
If you're not 'struggling', you're not alive. Dead people WISH they had a struggle to overcome.
Because people weaponize it against you.
Your mother’s timeline is similar to one of my relatives including the extreme religious fundamentalism and the issues with medication compliance. Thank you for sharing. People don’t talk about it enough.
Mental illness is not the shame, the shame is how we don't support and treat those with mental illness.

This is especially true in the military. Your career is over if you get labelled. I've seen it many times.
