Physical standards for men who can enlist are always lowered during the war. In WWI height standards lowered, in Vietnam IQ standards were lowered. The strongest men died off first in the last major world wars.
That is 100% true. The guys that I served with who died were braver, more competent and more athletic on average. In frontline units being above average gets you put into riskier positions.
