What cognitive peasants call "whataboutism" is the Socratic method, and it remains one of the best principle-revealing functions humans have ever had.

Socrates (470-399 BC) was a Greek philosopher who sought to get to the foundations of his students' and colleagues' views by asking continual questions until a contradiction was exposed, thus proving the fallacy of the initial assumption. This became known as the Socratic Method.

Yes! When underlying rational is applied properly to different context it reveals new perspective and many times the flaw in logic.pic.twitter.com/QFda3DeWrQ

Agreed. However, often the what about arguments are flawed logically or conflate issues. This is probably intentional. It is rare to have an honest debate, especially on twitter. People get so crazy. Fine - we disagree. That doesn’t have to make either of us evil. 🙄

The problem is that people don't typically use "Whataboutisms" in a Socratic way. They use them to downplay their side's issues and highlight the other side's issues. E.g: "Bobby hit Sally" "What about when Sally hit Eric?" Well, Bobby still freakin' hit Sally.
