This is what the Israeli establishment does routinely to get rid of popular prime ministers: investigate and indict them into resigning
1. Fed prosecutors are unelected and thus unaccountable to voters. An unelected official could disrupt an election via an indictment. No very democratic! 2. Getting elected should not be immunity from law. If it is not constitutional (not been challenged in SC, just OLC opinion) to indict a President, that shows a deficiency in the constitution. BTW, congress members who are elected gets indicted everyday by un-elected prosecutors.
