I'll usually risk viruses and malware from cracked versions of apps on torrent sites before I'll buy a piece of software.
Gotten good at picking clean ones, lol. Only now breaking this habit.

There's a few apps that I use where the previous versions have better functionality etc. What applications do you use to check for viruses etc?

Honestly I can't say what's best in the antivirus market. AVG Antivirus has *seemed* to work well even at the free version level. What I've really developed through trial and error is a sense of what probably contains malware/a virus so as to avoid downloading in the first place.

The cost of an app is the investment in time to find it, evaluate it, and learn how to use it. Back in the day I got Linux for "free" from Red Hat's subscription service for the extra convenience. Meanwhile, MSoft was buy once, get updated for years proposition.

Similarly, we balk at paying for content, while we pay and pay and pay with our time and attention. "It's worth a hour of my time to watch, but not a dollar to pay to watch"
