Controversial reply: I totally agree with this. More community living equals happier living.

"Let's just stare at each other and a baby 24/7," how did someone conclude that was healthy.
-
And really only talk to each other! So dumb. Emotional intimacy with other women is a super important part of my life; freedom and emotional intimacy with other men is super important for my man.

Great point. Also, the notion of kids moving out at 18 is viewed as strange in many parts of the world. Western family life can be very alienating. Much easier with more relatives around to support each other. Less divorce, better for child rearing, etc.
-
100% agree. I think the proper way to do it is to charge a small rent fee to your 18 year old so they get the sense of responsibility and understanding so that they can built up and get their own place eventually and know how to manage money and the monthly bills

I have a wife and 3 daughters. Without work and a lot of bro time I'd go insane.

Also live in the same city as my parents and hers. The kids see grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and great-grandparents every week

I think nuclear family referred to the family as the nucleus... the extended family and religious communities were always implied as the rest of the cell/atom.

Duh, it's obvious. Cerno is just trying to sound smart.

If you are looking to "find yourself" in another person or "be saved" by another person, and that person is the one you marry, you could be in for a rough time. Selfish intent (dependence) vs. joyful individualized progression.

It's common in Arab countries. Multiple generations live in the same complex. In east Europe the grandparents are also part of the household. When Jewish Russians came to Israel, in the 1990s, we joked about how every Russian family came with a Babushka on the living room couch.
-
Agree with your point overall but we have to be careful holding up the Arab world as a model of gender relations. But yes, the extended family network is great.

Wow! My parenting experience has been a LOT more than staring at a baby with my husband looking over my shoulder.

Yes. The nuclear family is for the convenience of capitalism. The 4 passenger car etc Psychotherapy was invented to get people to stop doing what was done to them from the top of the nuclear hierarchy.

But nuclear family isn’t antithetical to the wider family - just a constituent part of it.
