Kyle has a great head above his shoulders he should have apologized and leave it at that. The quickest way out of a wrong is plainly admitting it and not making excuses about it. Unless you are dealing with an asshole in which case not admitting shit is the way to go.
I had extended family members who normalized that word. Even as a kid and teen... I felt disturbed by the use of it. We were a deeply religious family, and it was treated as a word that was just as bad (or worse) than the F-bomb.
