People who grew up working class have more stories than a canned line like, "My mom scrubbed toilets." I'll tell ya what it's like actually going up poor in America. First, you're ashamed to have friends come over to your house. Shame is a theme of growing up poor...

Well growing up poor did end up teaching me the value of the small things, hard work, simple lifestyle, gratefulness, and will power. Being poor in America is way different than poverty in a third world country.

You’re more likely to wind up in divorce over money problems than having an affair.

Oh and nevermind the social contacts and the traps to keep the poor exactly that.

I grew up in a household of seven. Back then 5 kids wasn't a big deal. We didn't have much but we had love for each other. At my age now I consider that rich.

I grew up poor, envied the kids in school with me that weren’t, but it is what it is.

Poverty is a nasty energy vampire on one shoulder and an angel blowing compassion into your soul on the other. Its a whirlwind existence - not particularly fun nor fair - and you end up breathless and beaten but benevolent.

I hear ya. I would rather have stress from being successful than not. As my cousin said to me I would love to have your stress.

Well said, it’s horrible to go to bed hungry or not have nice clothes growing up.

not everyone sees it and experiences it like you do. i grew up poor and middle class, starting middle class and ending poor because of layoffs. i used social services and welfare and financial aid. i STILL shop at the thrift shop even though i got a degree and make good money.

The middle class has been taught to feel guilty about their modest successes and so they act like being poor is the better way because of the perceived simplicity of life of the poor. They ignore the sleepless nights wondering when you will end up on the street. Being poor sucks.
