People who grew up working class have more stories than a canned line like, "My mom scrubbed toilets." I'll tell ya what it's like actually going up poor in America. First, you're ashamed to have friends come over to your house. Shame is a theme of growing up poor...

Growing up poor sucked, all these “lessons” from supposedly being poor are fake. If growing up poor were as good as people say, I wouldn’t have put all of my money into a trust fund for my daughters! Chronic stress of money is an early death. Don’t glamorize this shit.

You are correct. My father was the 1st in his family to go to college from the GI bill after the Korean War. My father grew up on an IL farm & the only way he could leave was to join the military. He did well and left the farm as a result & my family became upper middle class.

I also believe poverty is somewhat subjective. One mans poverty is very different than another. But I always think that it could be worse, my father could have been a molester, or something more sinister. He ran a small failing business... That HIS RICH DAD GAVE HIM.

I always found it ironic that my dad grew up wealthy but we was so nasty poor. I agree with so much of this. Having parents give you a safety net allows you to fail until you get it right. (or fail forever off your parents) Too much of this "start from nothing stuff" is fake.

When I would ask my dad about college he would say, "poor boys go to war rich boys go to college" And your right, being poor was embarrassing. We didnt have a shower and had to recycle bath water because the hot water heater was slow. Imagine taking a bath in milk. YUCK.

I joined the military to pay for college. I also knew people who's parents scrubbed toilets to make a living. I did that too for a while.

We didn’t have money for cat food so I would scoop my oatmeal to feed my cat. She died of malnutrition in the middle of winter... those are the real stories. And at 10 years old I KNEW we were poor

I was poor enough to get free tuition and a Pell grant. I joined the military because I was so depressed from college. That was the happiest time of my life.
