When tech founders talk about being “poor,” what they mean is they were illiquid or had cash flow issues. Being poor means no assets no cash flow and no safety net. I love entrepreneurs but enough of the fake rags to riches bullshit.pic.twitter.com/OVxcyi07k1
There a Hegelian dialect of angry resentful lefties who hate tech founders and entrepreneurs And tech bros who think dropping out of Harvard to start a company is rages to riches. Possible to love business owners while also saying knock out the fake poverty bullshit.
A lot of famous figures have disingenuous rags-to-riches biographies ---a little more digging often reveals they were quite well connected with significant family resources...not that there aren't great success stories out there.
More true today than 100 years ago. My Grandad grew up poor, had only a HS education/mostly read/self-taught, flew/fought in a Spad in WW1 over France & became an editor for many small town & small city newspapers and lastly a VP at U.S. Steel in his late 50’s.
"Self-made" is also fake.
This is true best safety net is living at home with parents
"the hard working" sort of stopped me in my tracks...smh.
Your a little one sided on this. My best friend in high school's father fled Cuba after Castro came to power. Had to spend a year in Spain, because he couldn't get a Visa straight to US. Hit the US with nothing and no one. 1/2
2/2 By the time Ozzie (my friend) graduated from high school, Ozzies dad owned a successful real estate company, owned a large house, and could send his son to medical school. Starting from nothing and making it does happen. Don't deny these stories.
I agree I am self made and independent from real poverty. I’m shocked at how many business owners come from way upper middle class homes. The GoPro guy story is a complete lie.
This is why marriage is so important. The safety net mutually provided by spouses.
Most people don't have that sweet alimony check to fall back on, amirite?
So true. Get annoyed with people saying take risks with reckless abandon. Not easy for somebody that has nobody they can lean on.
We could make Bernie President and make everyone equal on $2 per day like in many Third World hell-holes where they have no toilets or piped water.
