1984 is a great book but it doesn’t qualify as a great American novel for many reasons. My favorite author is Neal Stephenson and not even Cryptonomican (“set” in WWII sort of) meets the definition.https://twitter.com/Hessian_Mohd/status/1126606534400708615 …

I much prefer Orwell's "Animal Farm" to to his "1984". But the '84 movie adaptation of "1984" with John hurt and Richard Burton was really excellent on so many levels. So, read "Animal Farm" but definitely watch the '84 film "1984".

I always thought 1984 was the definitive book on dystopia but then I read "Brave New World" and then I read "Martin Martin's On The Other Side" by Mark Wernham
