A safe answer for someone who hasn’t read anything not assigned to him in grade school. Some better choices: - Bonfire of the Vanities - Fight Club - Catch-22 Some would add The Road, but Blood Meridian would better fit the definition for great American novel.https://twitter.com/benshapiro/status/1126185463226687488 …

The Average American Male is an honorary mention, it’s not great American novel but it’s almost there. It captures the banality and despair of a generation of 20-something men. Fight Club without the fighting.https://www.amazon.com/Average-American-Male-Novel/dp/0061231673 …

It’s interesting that Post Office never makes the great American novel lists. No book captures the rage of a working stiff in a job he hates

The Virginian, by Owen Wister, though assigned in college, was a great read and it captured an era pretty well

The amount of times I had to read Romeo and Juliet, the Crucible, and Huck Finn during high school was infuriating.

There is a reason those novels are assigned. They have themes that are timeless and universal. I chose American Psycho, which does capture the zeitgeist of an age, but will it stand the test of time? Will it still be relevant to people Fifty years from now?

I enjoyed Grossman’s The Magicians. A young guy - with literally the world at his fingertips - faced with the seemingly impossible modern day task of finding any sense of meaning, is left pursuing a path of self-destruction.

I became an avid reader late in life. Wasn’t until my oldest son bought me a Kindle for Fathers Day 9 years ago. I read over 50 books a year. I’m eclectic person and so is my reading choices. The Kindle is an effective tool for my choices.
