A great American novel captures the zeitgeist of an age, so the definition is broad. But man people picking the same 5 novels (high school reading list) shows there needs to be an updated curriculum.

A safe answer for someone who hasn’t read anything not assigned to him in grade school. The Road is short enough to throw in anywhere. If you are a father, you should read The Road. Heart wrenching.

It's the most powerful thing I've ever read (5 times now). I've never been more grateful for blue skies and green grass, for all the abundance we take for granted around us, and for this whole damn world. This book haunts me.
