A safe answer for someone who hasn’t read anything not assigned to him in grade school. Some better choices: - Bonfire of the Vanities - Fight Club - Catch-22 Some would add The Road, but Blood Meridian would better fit the definition for great American novel.https://twitter.com/benshapiro/status/1126185463226687488 …

A great American novel captures the zeitgeist of an age, so the definition is broad. But man people picking the same 5 novels (high school reading list) shows there needs to be an updated curriculum.

The Average American Male is an honorary mention, it’s not great American novel but it’s almost there. It captures the banality and despair of a generation of 20-something men. Fight Club without the fighting.https://www.amazon.com/Average-American-Male-Novel/dp/0061231673 …

It’s interesting that Post Office never makes the great American novel lists. No book captures the rage of a working stiff in a job he hates

The Road is short enough to throw in anywhere. If you are a father, you should read The Road. Heart wrenching.

It's the most powerful thing I've ever read (5 times now). I've never been more grateful for blue skies and green grass, for all the abundance we take for granted around us, and for this whole damn world. This book haunts me.
