Assume people make false public accusations about you. Many observers will think less of you if they believe, but no legal action is threatened. How important is it to publicly respond with denials & rebuttals, & how does that depend on the status of the accuser?

A majority says only respond to high status accusers. If this is because others won't believe lower status accusers, we have problem that we've only "deputized" high status folks to accuse. But they are so few & busy that most bad behavior may go on without inducing accusation.

False accusations from high status accusers increase your own social status assuming you can’t be fired or be steam rolled like Tim Hunt. But in world where lies ruin careers, one must never apologize or resign and make them defeat you. Again Tim Hunt’s case is illustrative.
