World War I was pointless and yet we were dragged in. Why? There’s none better on the subject than Judge Holden.https://youtu.be/TIQynsWpBpQ

@cernovich - If you haven't listened to Dan Carlin's 6 Episode Epic, its the best researched and most interesting book/documentary or podcast on WW1 that I have ever read/seen/heard. Its incredible.

You wonder if today’s USA could handle those kind of WW2 casualties numbers, let alone the death #s from the Civil War in 4 years of fighting.

The D Day losses alone would be unacceptable. Not to mention the Island hopping in the Pacific.

Dan Carlin did a powerful job conveying the human cost of WW1 & not just the facts in his podcast series Blueprint for Armageddon. One thing that's stuck with me was how long they had men charging machine guns.. Without body armor or helmets. Horrifying.https://www.dancarlin.com/product/hardcore-history-50-blueprint-for-armageddon-i/ …

For combatants WWI was in many ways more brutal and horrifying than WWII. What's worse, there was no clear sides. No one who can really be labeled the "villain". It's partly why Hollywood doesn't make many movies about this era.

My grandfather was there and I'm lucky to have a letter he wrote home. The way he described it was amazing using his south GA vernacular.

I believe WW1 was European elites/Royalty depopulation of the working classes. Glad USA stepped in when it did and helped out, quickening the end to the madness. How many millions more would have been slaughtered?

WW1 was literally a meat grinder. Hundreds of thousands died over minimal territory. Sad.

If this is the first battle of Messines, then the 1 indian Corp were there. The empire used indians as cannon fodder.
