  Practically every single conservative that I know (myself included) grew up poor and our families grew up poor. But I/we never expected or felt entitled to anything from the government.

  I grew up poor and I have never blamed it or used it as some excuse to make me feel better than others because I was down for the struggle. I'm Conservative and most of my conservative friends growing up were poor too.

  False choice. All dictatorships ultimately lead to a disaster regardless of their political flavour. What really matters is whether the powerful trend of centralization can be reversed before you have a totalitarian state; not the guise under which it happens.
