Deep content - long articles on a niche site. Thin content - a short video on "protein smoothie." Media companies like Business Insider cried as they couldn't compete, they wanted to capitalize on every trend even though they had no expertise. Google rigged the algo for them.

Once upon a time Google claimed the algorithms were unbiased and as such the company were immune to antitrust issues. That all changed when they started hitting the buttons and tweaking the knobs manually.

It's still based on links no matter what Google says. More emphasis has been placed on domain authority which is what large corprate sites have and small local site lack.
