People who grew up working class have more stories than a canned line like, "My mom scrubbed toilets." I'll tell ya what it's like actually going up poor in America. First, you're ashamed to have friends come over to your house. Shame is a theme of growing up poor...

My dad made $8 an hour at a factory, for a family of 6. Others had it worse but I’m not gonna let faker in the media (or Congress) act like they know something about growing up poor.

The first time I read a book and identified with an author's story of childhood, it was The Glass Castle. Though not a contest, she had it worse. But damn, saw so much of my life in this story.https://www.amazon.com/Glass-Castle-Memoir-Jeannette-Walls/dp/074324754X …

You don’t want to ask your mom for new shoes bc you have a hole in your only pair and know she can’t afford it ... you’re mad at yourself for not being more careful. You’ll ask next month. Maybe.

I can remember my mom when I was a kid defrosting the only stuff left in the freezer to make something for supper. If she didn't we wouldn't have had anything to eat. Its funny but when I was a kid I never knew we were poor. Thank god my parents loved us never knew.

Every day was a different dinner theme. TV dinners and McDonald's took up two nights. Meatloaf often. Pasta. Late 1970's

If we are only referring to food i remember putting water in ketchup at the end to stretch it, apple rings not apple jacks for dinner, lunch ladies making you a pb&j in the back room and giving it to you there so no one else would see it, but mostly sleep was my least fav dinner
